How I Balance Motherhood and Running My Business: A Day in My Life

Balancing motherhood and running a business is no small feat, but it’s a journey I’ve embraced with open arms. Every day is a mix of chaos and joy, challenges and wins, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

If you’ve ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a mompreneur like me—juggling client deadlines, snack time, and everything in between—here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I make it work (most days!).

Morning: Setting the Tone for the Day

My day starts whenever my son decides to wake up (which could be anywhere from 6 AM to 8 AM). There’s no strict alarm clock—just the unpredictable schedule of a little one! The first hour of my day is dedicated to family time. We snuggle, chat, and ease into the morning with breakfast. I love these quiet moments because they help me feel connected before diving into work mode.

After breakfast, it’s time to get everyone ready for the day. Some mornings are smooth; others involve last-minute outfit negotiations, spilled milk, and an unexpected hunt for a missing toy. But I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability—because, honestly, these little moments make motherhood so special.

By 9:30 AM, I settle into my home office, coffee in hand, ready to tackle the day’s tasks. This is my golden hour—the quietest part of my workday when I can focus on deep, high-priority work. Whether it’s responding to client emails, reviewing financial reports, or creating content for my blog and social media, I use this time for tasks that require the most concentration.

🔹 Mompreneur Tip: I use a planner to map out my top three priorities for the day. This helps me stay on track even when things inevitably get hectic!

Mid-Morning: The Multi-Tasking Magic Hour

Around 11:00 AM, I take a short break from work to do a quick household chore—maybe throwing in a load of laundry, vacuuming, or unloading the dishwasher. It’s my way of blending work and home life so that chores don’t pile up by the end of the day.

If my son is home, this is also a time when I pause to spend a few moments with him. We might read a book, do a quick puzzle, or just chat while I sip my second cup of coffee. These tiny moments of connection remind me why I chose this flexible work-life balance in the first place.

Lunchtime: Recharge and Refocus

Lunch is a non-negotiable pause in my day. No matter how busy I am, I make it a point to sit down and eat with my son. It’s a chance to step away from screens, recharge, and be fully present with him.

On some days, if I’m feeling ambitious, I squeeze in a quick walk outside or some stretching to re-energize. Moving my body, even for just 10 minutes, makes a huge difference in my energy levels for the rest of the afternoon.

🔹 Mompreneur Tip: Try stepping outside for fresh air during lunch—it’s a simple but powerful way to reset your mind and boost creativity!

Afternoon: Collaboration and Creativity

Afternoons are when I shift into creative mode. This is my favorite time for brainstorming blog ideas, drafting social media content, and working on long-term projects for The Balance Edge.

I also schedule client meetings and collaboration calls during this window since it aligns well with their availability. Whether I’m helping a solopreneur streamline their bookkeeping or assisting an e-commerce business with virtual assistant tasks, these conversations remind me why I love what I do—helping other business owners reclaim their time.

By 3:30 PM, I switch gears back into mom mode. School pickup, snack time, and extracurricular activities take center stage. Some days, it’s a whirlwind of back-to-back activities, while other days are more relaxed. Regardless, I make a conscious effort to be present, even if my mind is still buzzing with work thoughts.

🔹 Mompreneur Reality Check: Some afternoons feel smooth and productive, while others feel like a juggling act gone wrong. And that’s okay. Flexibility is key!

Evening: Family First

Dinner is a sacred time in our house. We sit down together, share stories from our day, and enjoy a meal. I love hearing my son’s little stories—sometimes about his favorite toy, other times about a “big adventure” he had at school.

After dinner, we shift into bedtime mode—baths, pajamas, and bedtime stories. These quiet moments before sleep are some of my favorite parts of the day. There’s nothing quite like winding down with a bedtime book and knowing that no matter how busy the day was, we ended it together.

Once my son is asleep, I have one last opportunity to check in on work. Some nights, I use this time to respond to emails or plan content for the next day. Other nights, I completely unplug and enjoy me-time—watching my favorite show, reading a book, or just chatting with my husband.

🔹 Mompreneur Reminder: It’s okay to have off nights where you don’t finish your to-do list. Your well-being matters, too!

How I Make It Work: My Go-To Strategies

Balancing motherhood and business isn’t about achieving perfection; it’s about prioritizing what matters most. Here are a few strategies that keep me sane:

  • Time Blocking: I assign specific times for work, family, and self-care to ensure nothing gets completely neglected.

  • Outsourcing: Just like I help my clients free up their time, I’ve learned to delegate at home when needed. Whether it’s asking my partner for extra help or ordering groceries online, outsourcing is self-care.

  • Flexibility: Some days don’t go as planned, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to adapt and not stress over the little things.

  • Support System: Surrounding myself with a strong support system—whether it’s my partner, family, or a network of fellow mompreneurs—makes all the difference.
